We’ve caught up with three of the best distilleries in Mexico to bring you a few tequila-based cocktails that will transport you straight to the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.
Tequila Tromba
When it comes to boutique tequila production, Tequila Tromba is the place to go. Founded by Marco Cedano after 40 years in the industry as master distiller for several prestigious brands, Tequila Tromba was born as a very personal project of Marco’s, who brought the craft of tequila distilling to modern refinement.
Mixing science and art in equal parts and drawing from various distilling techniques, Marco and his son Rodrigo are pushing boundaries with their premium tequila, which is made 100% from agave harvested after seven years of maturation in Los Altos, the famous highlands of Jalisco.
From the jimadores, expert tradesmen who specialize in cutting and harvesting the agave by hand, down to the artisan glassblower who makes the bottles for the limited edition Extra Añejo, the team at Tromba Tequila puts passion at the forefront of their practice.
Spice up your holidays with these two recipes from their incredible collection!
For the infusion, leave 8 oz (1 cup) of Tromba Blanco to macerate overnight in the fridge with 5-7 slices of cucumber and 3-4 teaspoons of grapefruit zest. To prepare the cocktail, filter the infused tequila and pour with the white cranberry juice and salt into a rocks glass filled with ice. Stir well, top with the soda and gently stir again.
Add all ingredients to a cocktail yarai (mixing glass) with ice and stir down until well diluted. Strain into an old-fashioned glass, either over fresh ice or straight up. For a premium look, garnish your drink with boozy cherries or an orange slice.
Born out of a long family tradition of liquor distillers that spans over 80 years and two countries, Casa Maestri is easily one of the most awarded tequila distillery in Mexico.
The love child of Michael and Celia, Casa Maestri has been specializing in the production of Reposado, Añejo, and their very own “Reserva MFM” Blanco tequila for over twenty years. Using traditional methods of manufacturing and the best agave from Jalisco, they produce an ultra-smooth tequila which is a joy to behold and a real treat to your palate.
The distillery works with local agave producers to ensure a constant high-quality supply of the best agave, which requires six to fourteen years to reach full maturity. Once harvested as close as possible to the rainy season, the agave is then slow-cooked in brick-walled ovens to prevent caramelizing, soften the sturdy fibers, and retain its naturally mellow flavor.
A mill shreds the fibers further to extract the sugary juice, which is then fermented for anything up to 60 hours, during which a naturally occurring yeast is added. Lastly, a double distillation process results in an approximately 55% alcohol tequila, which people the world over have been enjoying for over twenty years.
The Team at Casa Maestri was kind enough to share a couple of special recipes just for the Nopo - read on to create your perfect tequila-based cocktail and stun your guests this New Year’s Eve!

As their mantra recites, “LALO is not intended as a special occasion tequila, it is intended to make any occasion special.”
At Lalo Spirits, tequila is so much more than a drink. It’s a philosophy, a way of a life. Drinking their purest Blanco tequila is an experience that involves all your senses. Your eyes feast on its rich platinum color, you can feel the viscosity and the lingering aroma on your fingertips, smell the notes of cooked agave, sweet potato, and cinnamon, and finally inhale, take a sip, exhale and taste the richness of the agave, followed by subtler notes of citrus and tropical fruit.
Named after the founder Eduardo “Lalo” González, Lalo has been distilling excellent Blanco tequila for generations, using the finest agave from Jalisco and adhering strictly to traditional processes of harvesting, cooking, fermentation, and distillation. Each bottle is 100% pure tequila, made only with agave, water, and yeast, and rigorously distilled only twice, to retain the complex essence of the agave.
Several generations of tequileros in the González family have passed down decades of knowledge and best practices, and today Lalo and his friend David have perfected their Blanco tequila paying particular attention to high labor standards and community development.
While the team recommends drinking Lalo neat, on the rocks, or with a splash of soda, they also recommend a good old Ranch Water, a Texan favorite, and a refreshing Paloma.
Fill a lowball glass with crushed ice. Add the tequila and lime juice, and finish it off with the Topo Chico mineral water. Give it a shake and enjoy!
Wet the rim of a highball glass with some water and roll around in some salt to coat the rim evenly. Add all the ingredients except the soda water in a shaker filled with ice. Give it a vigorous shake, then strain in your prepared glass. Add the club soda and a couple of ice cubes to serve. For a more festive look, garnish the glass with a wedge of grapefruit.
