Meet The Nomad Collective, The Nopo's community of Ambassadors: endlessly creative and curious individuals who are making a positive impact in the world, working every day to shape the reality of their everyday life for the better. Our Ambassadors are supporting The Nopo in our mission to democratize e-commerce and allow artistic excellence to become truly borderless. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will be introducing them and their Curated Collections, continuing this week with Lupe Puerta.

--------

What happens when you equip a young girl’s imagination with her older sister’s copies of Vogue, a pair of scissors, and a move from a small town in the Spanish Basque country to London? Simply put, Lupe Puerta does.

Just before I was connected on our Zoom call, I wondered what a fashion industry guru and female entrepreneur extraordinaire might be like… And the answer was humble, friendly, and most of all, stylish. With her bright smile and eyes sparking acumen and enthusiasm, Lupe just needed an hour to have me fully entranced with her jet-setting life working in luxury fashion and meeting the best and brightest (and mostly female) the industry has dished out in the last twenty years.

“Today we can access a huge variety of products and it’s really hard to find something that is truly authentic and unique. I fell in love with The Nopo’s variety of wares and styles, the attention to detail, the focus on craftsmanship, and the kindness and passion the team shows. To me, shopping on The Nopo is like finding those tiny boutiques when you’re on holiday, except The Nopo brings it straight to your doorstep!”

“Clothes have always been important in my family, as they often are in Mediterranean countries. My dad always wore suits, my mum is always very elegant. I saw dressing up as art from a very young age.”

Sneaking copies of Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire from her older sister, Lupe grew up creating her own looks, mixing and matching garments, setting the foundations for what would become her signature classy, elegant look accentuated by statement accessories and jewelry, le The Nopo’s very own Amor Earrings by Cefeida.

“When I was a child I used to look at the glossy pages of magazines and think: “I wish I was wearing that!”, so I started to cut my own clothes and sometimes even my own hair… Leaving my mother utterly horrified!”

While her love for fashion struck loud and clear, Lupe didn’t consciously think about a career in it until later on. Although the small town she grew up in, Irún, was fairly cosmopolitan with its proximity to the French Basque country and lots of cultural border crossing, social media, and the internet were still a fairly new concept, and Lupe wasn’t exposed to the wealth of careers she could have pursued until she moved to London.

There, while finishing her studies, she started working in a second-hand designer clothes store in Covent Garden. It was her first experience on the shop floor and one that would kick start a career spanning two decades, several countries, hundreds of sales teams built, and thousands of satisfied customers across the globe.

“In my early days at the shop, I went to Vivienne Westwood’s all the time because her buttons were so beautiful that they always used to get stolen from our clothes, and I use to go ask for replacement ones. I loved her buttons, the way she used them, the designs and creativity I saw in such a small, you could say insignificant, detail. I was gobsmacked when the store manager approached me one day and asked if I would be interested in working as a sales assistant with them since I spent most of my time there anyway!”

And just like that, Lupe was launched into the world of high-end fashion via one of the most iconic women designers of all time. Harrod’s and Selfridge’s followed after that, but Lupe remained close to the heart of the industry: the floor.

There she learned how to talk to customers, how to grasp their needs, wants, and expectations from a sideline look at a jumper, a light stroke of fingers on a hanging dress. Building the floor sales team offline was at the very core of her being, and it’s no surprise then that a call would come from the authority in the nascent world of online personal shopping - NET-A-PORTER.

Newly founded and quickly rising to the industry fore, NET-A-PORTER was a great opportunity for Lupe to move from the physical shop floor to the digital space and to a completely new - and until there non-existing - role. “It was such an exciting place to be, we were pioneering online personal shopping, a concept which didn’t really exist in people’s minds at the time.”

For the next sixteen years, Lupe put her heart and soul into building elite sales teams across the world, marrying the genuine joy of providing customers with an excellent service with the satisfaction of building worldwide sales teams that bring revenue into a business.

Lupe’s entrepreneurial spirit came knocking again when, during a sabbatical, she realized her next step would be to start her own business. “It’s funny, I was sitting on the tube with my keynote slides, jotting down what THE FLOORR would become, and I had no idea what I was dreaming up would turn into a fully functional and growing business in the space of nine months.”
